GB27: Monitors - "Rotten Body Clean-Up Crew"

Band: Monitors
Title: Rotten Body Clean-Up Crew
Release Date: 2004
Catalog Number: GB 27
Notes: 300 copies
Format: 7" record
Speed: 45rpm

Tracklist:
A1: Rotten Body Clean-Up Crew A2: Seizure Fever B1: Future Punx B2: Teleporter Tragedy

Band Members:
BRyan, 1-D, Mechadrum

Reviews:
Second single from The Monitors, who, if you're not paying attention, are Ryan and Mechadrum (ex-Kill-A-Watts) and Wendy (ex-Lookers, Kryptonite Records, and more) hamming it up with some schticky future punk action. Good title cut, the mongo back-ups on "Seizure Fever" rule, nice use of bass/keys/drums instrumentation. On the flip, "Future Punx" is kinda boring, but "Teleporter Tragedy" is kinda funny. The keys sound more and more like something out of a video game on this one, but Wendy plays them well. Really bouncy and non-droning, which is good. I think they need to take this thing full circle and do like a Doctor Who concept record or cover Art Attacks' "I Am A Dalek". Or maybe a Monitors game for the Super NES console.

GB19: Vee Dee - "Bloodzombie"

Band: Vee Dee
Title: Bloodzombie
Release Date: 2004
Catalog Number: GB 19
Notes: 300 copies
Format: 7" record
Speed: 45rpm

Tracklist:
A: Bloodzombie B: Her Eyes

Band Members:

Nick D'Vyne (vocals, guitars), Low Hydro (bass, vocals), Anti-Mtter (drums)

Reviews:

More classic-era Misfits on a Vee-yet-Nam psych-out acid trip with a touch of rockhard umph and stun-gun bass from these Chicago-ites. Their LP keeps getting better if you ask me, and "Blood Zombie" is one of the better cuts from it. The flip keeps up the same downer-vibe momentum, with another song about a girl. I'm honestly quite surprised that this band is good for some reason. The sleeve lists a third track that does not actually appear on the record, keeping up the Goodbye Boozy tradition of jukebox-friendly singles.(RK)
Boy, did I not like Vee Dee when I saw them. It's been a while, and either they've improved mightily, or this showcases them at their best. Likely a bit of both. "Blood Zombie" is the clear winner here, nasty sounding and catchy rockpunk, and "Her Eyes" is a nice (but somewhat less catchy) rocker in a similar vein. More Chicago goodness...it's hard to keep up with all that's goin' on down there, and I know there's a lot more to come, so strap yerself. What's the deal with "Somebody Loves You"? (TK)

GB55: Mikal Cronin - "Gone"

Band: Mikal Cronin
Title: Gone
Release Date: 2010
Catalog Number: GB 55
Notes: 300 copies
Format: 7" record
Speed: 45rpm

Tracklist:
A:  Gone B:  Give It To Me

Band Members:
Mikal Cronin

Reviews:
I thought Mikal Cronin’s “Gone” on the A-Side sounded like a stompin, TY SEGALL-like garage rocker, and of course, I see that he’s in CHARLIE AND THE MOONHEARTS and is no stranger to TY SEGALL (they collaborated on the Pop Song 7” on Goodbye Boozy a couple years ago and Reverse Shark Attack LP on Kill Shaman from last year). Mikal told me that he played all the instruments himself on both these tracks, the standout of the single being the B-Side. “Give It To Me” on the flipside is a lovely TROGGS cover that manages to both invoke the original yet sound nothing like it at all. Mikal starts his version slower, like a sleepy morning that can’t quite wake up. He takes his time with it, dipping and rising to a fuzzed out climax in ways the urgent, repetitive beat of the TROGGS’ version never did. All throughout there’s a yearning in his voice so perfect for the song that I can’t believe I never noticed it was lacking before. Probably the best TROGGS cover I’ve heard. (Janelle Hollyrock)

Reviews:
One fucking side of smutty punk rock treats you as hard as fisting with a pair of studded leather gloves covered with layers of various crust. “Decapitated” reminds Janelle of the Black Jaspers and I agree but this is even more X-Rated & GG Allin fueled! Oh shit you get 3 brutal variations of snuff porno cover art. Both songs’ grooves are pressed on only one side of the vinyl. Edition of 100 on black vinyl. (Bob Scott)

GB47: Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin - "Pop Song"

Band: Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin
Title: Pop Song
Release Date: 2009
Catalog Number: GB 47
Notes: 300 copies

Second pressing of 155 on black and 155 on mixed coloured vinyl
Format: 7" record
Speed: 45rpm

Tracklist:
A:  Pop Song B1:  So, I Went To Beach, Melody B2:  Kit Carson

Band Members:
Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin

Reviews:
Nice, short trebley noise on A-side’s “Pop Song”. It’s fun and bound to annoy people who like production values with its overtly distorted vocals. Ty Segall returns to Italian label Goodbye Boozy collaborating with Mikal Cronin from Okie Dokie. The duo really works here on the B-side. “So, I went to the Beach” blends into a killer warped instrumental, my favourite cut of the three. Could imagine Elvis Gratton in a speedo bathing suit gyrating to that one! Ends with “Melody Kit Carson”. I thought this 7″ was really good. Check out all Ty Segall’s stuff including his Skin 7″ on GB, it’s incredible. (Bob Scott)

GB54: Dead Ghosts - "That Old Feeling"

Band: Dead Ghosts
Title: That Old Feeling
Release Date: 2010
Catalog Number: GB 54
Notes: 300 copies
Format: 7" record
Speed: 45rpm

Tracklist:
A: That Old Feeling B1: Blak Kat B2: Comanche

Band Members:
Bryan (guitar, vocals), Clint (bass, vocals), Drew (guitar), Mike (drums)

Reviews:

Scratchy vocals and jangly party time tunes are Vancouver garage rawkers Dead Ghosts’ MO and they don’t stray far with this new 3-song 7”. “That Old Feeling” and “Blak Kat” sound like the band is recording in their tiny jam space on Powell St again, which makes the cover of Link Wray’s “Comanche” all the more essential to break up the trashy harshness of the previous two tracks. This 7” was released simultaneously on three different labels, Goodbye Boozy, Krimen, and Ghost Records and each comes with an alternate sleeve. I think you get ‘em all with the purchase of any one 7”… or at least I did! The Goodbye Boozy one features recognizable art by poster phenom CM Ruiz, Ghost Records gets a starkly drawn fallen cowboy illustration… my first thought on seeing it was, “This should be an Indian Wars cover!” And of course, I see it’s done by Indian Wars’ John & Dave Martin. And then there’s Krimen’s sleeve, an uncredited photocopied cutout of a naked lady. Dead Ghosts’ debut full length is out now on Florida’s Dying! (Janelle Hollyrock)
